Following this training course, you will understand:
- The latest AI adoption trends and how AI is changing tasks in the workplace
- How generative AI and large language models work, and why they behave the way they do
- Key AI concepts in plain English, including tokens, context window, temperature, reasoning models, multimodal AI and agentic AI
- How to choose the right AI tool, model or mode for the task in hand
- How to write effective prompts using proven frameworks
- Why AI hallucinates, and practical ways to reduce and catch errors
- The difference between conversational and agentic AI
- How to delegate multi-step work with appropriate oversight
- What you can and can’t safely share with AI tools, and the governance controls every organisation needs
- How AI is changing the way people find information, and what that means for your organisation
All attendees receive certification and digital copies of course materials.
Course Overview
Generative AI has moved from novelty to an everyday workplace tool in a remarkably short time. Most organisations now use it in some form, yet many are still at the experimenting or pilot stage, and staff are often using AI without a clear understanding of how it works, where it falls short or what the rules are for using it safely.
AI Foundations is a one-day in-company course designed to close that gap. It gives your team a clear, jargon-free grounding in the AI landscape, the technology behind tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot, and the principles that separate confident, responsible use from guesswork.
The course includes how AI is being adopted at work, which platforms people are using and how regulation such as the EU AI Act is shaping its use. It demystifies the core concepts, from tokens and reasoning models to conversational and agentic AI, so you understand why AI tools produce the answers they do.
You’ll also learn structured prompting frameworks and techniques that expose hidden assumptions and improve the quality of outputs. And you’ll see first-hand why AI hallucinates and how to reduce the risk of AI making mistakes.
The course also covers the governance every organisation needs: what data can and cannot be shared, how the major platforms handle UK GDPR or other local privacy regulations, as well as a practical five-layer framework for assessing new AI use cases.
You’ll complete an AI literacy check at the end of the day, so you can see how far your knowledge has moved.
If you are at the beginning of your AI journey, this course is for you!

- How LLMs work: next-word prediction and self-attention
- Traditional search versus generative AI: why one is predictable and the other probabilistic
- Hallucinations: what they are, why they happen and how to reduce them
- Temperature: how AI balances predictability and creativity
- Tokens and context window: balancing data usage with accuracy
- Using RAG: grounding AI in your own trusted data
- Reasoning models: when to choose depth over speed
- Multimodal AI: working with text, images, audio and video
- Agentic AI: from responding to prompts to pursuing a goal
Prompting: Standard and Advanced Frameworks

- How memory and personalisation can influence AI outputs
- Advanced techniques: the assumption audit, Socratic questioning, chain of thought and the escalation ladder
- Using image inputs to extract information, interpret data and get design feedback
- Prompt workshop: building and testing prompts for your own role
AI and Data Governance
- Five governance principles: accountability, transparency, fairness, privacy and security, and human oversight
- Five layers of AI data governance: access, input, output use, storage, and control and audit
- What’s generally fine to share with AI, what needs thought, and what you should never share
- How ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot handle UK GDPR and data residency

Audience
The AI Foundations course is designed for professionals in any role who have either just started using generative AI at work, or who want a firmer grasp of how it works and how to use it well.
It is aimed at users with only rudimentary beginner-level experience using AI tools. No technical background is needed.
Delivered in-company, it’s ideal for organisations that want to give teams a shared baseline of AI knowledge before rolling out specific tool training.
Attendees will need access to an AI chatbot during the course, ideally the tool approved by your organisation.
